The Pew Campaign for Responsible Mining

This summer the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and dozens of national parks and recreation areas will be vacation destinations for millions of Americans and their families. But the spectacular scenery of these attractions and the family fun they provide is on a collision course with a Civil War-era law that gives the mining industry the right-of-way at almost every turn.

Congress is currently considering measures to modernize the nation's 19th century law that governs gold, uranium and other hardrock mining on federally-owned public lands. But reformers face a global mining industry that has escaped serious and effective federal regulation for decades.

Buckle up and take a tour. Visit national parks, national forests and other recreation destinations threatened by what is arguably the most antiquated law on the books today—the 1872 Mining Law.
